The History of Holbrooks Community Centre

During the World War of 1939-45, one of the many ways in which the American people sought to alleviate distress in Great Britain was through their generous support of the British War Relief Society of America. Amongst the contributions made to by this society towards British War relief was a gift of $150,000 for the purpose of providing a number of Community Centres in Coventry and other heavily blitzed towns.

From these funds the Holbrooks Community Centre was built, a splendid symbol of the bond of friendship and allegiance to common ideals which sustained the American & British people in their long and bitter struggle.

Social Supermarket

Our Social Supermarket supports those who need a little bit of extra help with buying food and home items. It runs on a Monday afternoon between 12:00 and 14:00 at Holbrooks Community Centre on John Shelton Drive, CV6 4PE.

An average shopping bag at our Social Supermarket would contain between £15 and £20 worth of groceries.: (items listed vary based on what we have in stock) We also have Personal Hygiene and Cleaning Bags available at £5 each too.

Breakfast cereals

Tinned food (soups, beans, fish, fruit etc.)

Baked goods

Fresh dairy items

Fresh meat or meat substitutes

Fresh vegetables

Fresh fruit

Personal hygiene products

cleaning products

plus, whatever other goodies we have donated to us at the time.

You will need to become a member to access the social supermarket.

Our membership fee is

£5 annual subscription (payable on your first visit)

and a weekly payment £5 (payable weekly) per bag recieved

The only criteria to become a member is that you are claiming one of the following benefits:

Community Cafe

Holbrooks Community Cafe runs alongside the Social Supermarket on a Monday between 12:00 and 14:00.

The Community Cafe offers freshly cooked hot meals on a pay-what-you-can basis and unlimited hot drinks to those who attend.

Meals include:

Jacket Potatoes, Soup, Shepherds Pie, Pasta , Stews and Casseroles which are made fresh on the premises in the morning ready for the community to eat.

We have a 5 Star Food Rating though coventry city council and all staff are food hygiene trained.
